A More Perfect Union Funds Nearly 80 Jewish Orgs Protecting and Strengthening Democracy Through Ignition Grants

New York, NY –  A More Perfect Union, a Jewish organization working to protect and strengthen democracy in the U.S., today announced that it has granted over $112,000 in Ignition Grants to 77 Jewish organizations committed to ensuring free, fair, safe, and accessible elections and supporting American democracy in 2024.

In a pivotal election year, these grants are fueling innovative, targeted, strategic initiatives across the United States, showcasing the determination in the Jewish community to ensure a strong democratic future.

Ignition Grants supported a wide range of projects submitted by partners in the Jewish Partnership for Democracy, ranging from local grassroots efforts to national campaigns, as well as collaborations between organizations to maximize impact. The grantees (listed below)  approach this work from a variety of perspectives and approaches, from art to organizing to voter education.

"Getting resources directly into the field is of paramount importance. Local organizations know best what their communities need,” said Aaron Dorfman, Executive Director of A More Perfect Union. “We were amazed when we looked around and found almost no one else getting pro-democracy funds to the grassroots level, where so much of democracy actually happens. We are proud that these funds have not only stimulated innovative work but also increased momentum in the Jewish community as we head into a contentious election season. We are inspired by the impact these grants are making already, and excited to know they will continue to help ensure free, fair, safe, and accessible elections this year."

Ignition Grant recipients concurred. “Ignition Grants are seeding democracy in local communities in a way that national campaigns cannot,” said Lisa Epstein, JCRC of the Jewish Federation of San Antonio. Rabbi Michael Holzman of Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation agreed, adding, “That the Jewish community has a hub for sustained work to strengthen American Democracy allows us to innovate and model religious citizenship for our community.”

A More Perfect Union is committed to supporting organizations that work to uphold the principles of democracy, particularly at a time when the American Jewish community, like many other minority groups, are relying on the institutions of American democracy for their safety and security. Applications for 2024 Ignition Grants are now closed, though A More Perfect Union plans on opening a new round of Ignition Grants in 2025.
